BioNET-NAFRINET is the North African Network of Taxonomy of BioNET-International. It has been created in 2002 by BioNET-INTERNATIONAL, the Global Network of Taxonomy, upon a proposal made to governments of the region. Four countries have endorsed the network: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt.
BioNET-NAFRINET aims to establish and support within the north-african subregion a realistic autonomy, in infrastructures, human resources and taxonomical services, needed to answer national and subregional sustainable development needs.
Being part of BioNET-INTERNATIONAL, BioNET-NAFRINET is supported by its Technical Secretariat and by the technical support of the most important centres in the world. It is a national and subregional initiative, supported by an international cooperation. It is an efficient way to help protect ecosystems in situ, and ex-situ conservation of genetic and biological resources of countries in the North-African sub-region.
